Tip of the Week #124 – Using Links in PrintVis and Microsoft Dynamics NAV

Project Manager Torben Nielsen brings us this week’s helpful tip for using PrintVis and Microsoft Dynamics NAV.

You may want to attach a hyperlink to a document or website to a specific record, such as a customer or document in Dynamics NAV. Or, you may want a link that opens a new empty email to a specific recipient when you select it. Some cards, such as customer and vendor cards, include a Home Page field where you can enter a URL. To include other links, you can use the links functionality, which is available from a variety of pages, e.g. customer, item, sales documents, journal lines etc.

Let me show you some examples of Links functionality.

First up, go to a customer card, and locate the “Links” button:

(Note: If the Links FactBox is not displayed on the page, customize the page to display Links. For more information, see How to: Customize FactBoxes.)

The links window would look something like this – note the Actions menu item:

Now for two scenarios:

Scenario 1: Link to external file or homepage

  1. In Links, choose Actions, and then choose New.
  2. In the Link Address field, enter an address for the file or website, such as D:\MyDocs\Agreement1.doc or www.microsoft.com.
  3. Fill in the Description field with information about the link.
  4. Choose the Save button.

Scenario 2: Link to open a program

  1. In Links, choose Actions, and then choose New.
  2. In the Link Address field, enter a specific string to open different programs, for example:
  3. Fill in the Description field with information about the link.
  4. Choose the Save button.

 Try them out!

  1. In Links, click the Link Address field, and choose the link (Globe). The appropriate program, such as Microsoft Word or Microsoft Internet Explorer, opens and displays the link target.

To delete a link from a record

  1. In Links, select the link that you want to delete.
  2. Choose Actions, and then choose Delete.
  3. Choose the Yes button to confirm the deletion.

 Have fun!

Thank you Torben!
