Selecting, contracting, and implementing business software for your print/graphics company is always a long-term project, one that is associated with long-term investments.

For this reason, it’s important in your selection process to look further than just technology. Before making your final choice, it’s crucial to know the market position of your preferred vendors. How fast are they growing? How broadly do they distribute their solutions? Are they independent and financially healthy? And are they financially capable of being at the forefront of innovation? In other words, are they able to survive the next 10 years?

After all, what good is the most suitable solution that will no longer be developed further shortly after your go-live or doesn’t even exist anymore?

Research Beyond the Functionality

When selecting a new print MIS/ERP solution, most organizations tend to focus too much on functions and features and the underlying technology. But while the available functionality is, of course, an important selection criterion, it’s a good idea to also look a bit further ahead.

How well is your vendor able to keep its solution suitable for you over time? How big is their earning potential that enables them to invest in R&D on a permanent basis – or even survive?

Here are some relevant questions that can help you measure the continuity outlook of the print software vendors on your shortlist:

  1. How many companies are actively using the solution at present?
  2. What was the growth rate of that number over the past 12 months?
  3. In how many countries around the world do they have customers?
  4. In how many countries is the MIS/ERP solution localized?
  5. How many countries have certified implementation partners for the MIS/ERP solution?
  6. How many countries offer local helpdesk support (language, culture, and time zones)?
  7. What is the size of the vendor’s annual R&D budget?
  8. Is there a publicly accessible product roadmap for the MIS/ERP solution?
  9. Is the MIS solution standalone or is it part of a larger IT platform that includes integrated ERP?
  10. What were the vendor’s financial results in the last financial year?

Answering these questions will help you to assess the likelihood of a bright future with your print management solution – one that includes continuous support, renewal, and breakthrough innovations. After all, you don’t buy a new system to use it for only a few months, right?
